Germany finished Equestrian Eventing Team on 166.10 penalty points to win the first Olympic gold medal handed out in Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region. Australia finished second on 171.20 points, while Great Britain won bronze on a score of 185.70.
Both Germany and Australia had started the Eventing Jumping test with a
narrow margin of less than four penalties between them.
The head-to-head finish continued to the last rider, Hinrich Romeike of Germany, riding Marius, who had one rail down on 54.20 penalties to give Germany the gold medal.
The victory holds special meaning for the
Germans who had their gold medal in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games withdrawn after Bettina Hoy had penalties upheld.
Great Britain won the bronze medal on a team score of 185.70 with Mary King ending on two poles down riding Call Again Cavalier. "The first mistake he had in two years," said a disappointed King on her fifth Olympic try.
The teams competed over a course of 13 jumping efforts within a time of 94 seconds. That did not prove hard to get for the experienced riders who rode rhythmically.
The top 25 ranked riders continue to the Eventing
Individual Final which takes place after the Team Final over a different course.
